On 08/11/2015, Myanmar held a nationwide general election in which the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, secured a decisive parliamentary majority. The vote was the first openly contested national election in Myanmar in 25 years and represented a major step in the country’s political transition after decades of direct military rule. Preliminary and final results released by the Union Election Commission showed that the NLD won a large majority of contested seats in both houses of the national parliament. The party captured about 255 of the 330 elected seats in the House of Representatives and 135 of the 168 elected seats in the House of Nationalities. These results provided the NLD with a parliamentary majority sufficient to form a government. Under Myanmar’s constitution, however, the military automatically holds 25 percent of the parliamentary seats, a provision that continued to ensure the armed forces maintained significant influence within the political system. The election saw high voter turnout across the country, with millions of citizens participating in polling stations nationwide. The vote followed a gradual political opening that began earlier in the decade after Myanmar’s military government initiated reforms and allowed political parties greater participation. International observers and foreign governments closely monitored the election process, viewing it as an important test of Myanmar’s democratic transition. Because of a constitutional provision barring individuals with foreign family members from the presidency, Aung San Suu Kyi was not eligible to become president. Her late husband, Michael Aris, was a British citizen, and their two sons hold British nationality. As a result, the NLD later nominated Htin Kyaw as president after the new parliament convened in 2016. Suu Kyi subsequently assumed the role of State Counsellor, a position created by parliament that allowed her to coordinate government policy and effectively lead the civilian administration. The 2015 election outcome reflected widespread public support for the NLD following decades of political repression and military control. Despite the electoral victory, Myanmar’s political structure still included strong military authority over key ministries and constitutional provisions that limited civilian control. The election nevertheless marked a significant development in Myanmar’s evolving political system and shaped the formation of the country’s first NLD-led government in March 2016. ● The National League for Democracy (NLD), under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, achieved a decisive victory in Myanmar's general election, securing a majority in the parliament. This election was pivotal in the context of Myanmar's political landscape, as it represented a shift from decades of military rule towards a more democratic governance structure. The NLD's success was not merely a reflection of popular support; it was also indicative of the public's desire for change after years of oppressive military governance. The NLD garnered a significant percentage of the votes, which allowed them to claim a substantial number of parliamentary seats, thereby positioning Aung San Suu Kyi as the de facto leader of the country. This transition was seen as a crucial step in Myanmar's ongoing journey towards democracy, following a long history of political turmoil and repression. The international community closely monitored the election, recognizing its potential to reshape Myanmar's future and improve its global standing. The NLD's victory was celebrated by many as a hopeful sign for the country's democratic aspirations, although challenges remained in the form of entrenched military influence and ongoing ethnic conflicts. The election results were a clear mandate from the electorate, emphasizing the need for reform and the establishment of a government that reflects the will of the people.
