In 2018, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan o cha met during major regional gatherings in India and Singapore, where Southeast Asian leaders discussed regional cooperation, economic development, and diplomatic issues. Their interactions occurred mainly at the ASEAN India Commemorative Summit held in New Delhi in January 2018 and later at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in Singapore in November 2018. The ASEAN India Commemorative Summit took place from 25/01/2018 to 26/01/2018 in New Delhi, marking 25 years of dialogue partnership between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During the visit, leaders attended official events hosted by India’s government, including a reception at the Mughal Garden in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Photographs from the gathering showed Rodrigo Duterte conversing with Aung San Suu Kyi and Prayut Chan o cha during the event. While in India, Duterte also spoke at a business forum where he publicly stated that he had advised Suu Kyi to ignore criticism from what he described as “noisy” human rights activists regarding the Rohingya crisis. He said he felt “pity” for her situation, describing the pressure she faced between international expectations and domestic political realities. Later in the year, the three leaders again participated in the 33rd ASEAN Summit, held in Singapore from 13/11/2018 to 15/11/2018. The summit gathered heads of government from the ten ASEAN member states to discuss economic integration, regional security, and cooperation with external partners. During the event, leaders took part in the traditional “ASEAN Way” group photograph, a symbolic moment that highlights unity among member states during the annual summit. At the Singapore summit, Aung San Suu Kyi addressed economic opportunities in Myanmar and encouraged ASEAN partners to invest in the country’s developing sectors. Rodrigo Duterte attended the summit’s key meetings but attracted media attention after reports that he skipped some informal morning activities on 14/11/2018, with officials explaining that he had taken short rest periods while still attending the main sessions with other ASEAN leaders. These interactions between the three leaders took place during a period of heightened international attention on Myanmar due to the Rohingya crisis and broader regional discussions within ASEAN about economic cooperation and political stability in Southeast Asia. ● Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar, engaged in a meeting with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. This meeting was part of broader diplomatic efforts in Southeast Asia, focusing on regional cooperation and addressing pressing issues such as security, economic development, and public health. The leaders discussed various topics, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their respective countries and the importance of a coordinated response to health crises. The collaboration among these leaders reflects the interconnected nature of Southeast Asian nations and their shared challenges. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties and foster a collaborative approach to governance and crisis management in the region. The discussions also highlighted the significance of regional partnerships in addressing not only health-related issues but also economic recovery and stability in the face of global challenges. The leaders recognized the need for a unified strategy to enhance resilience against future pandemics and other emergencies, emphasizing the importance of sharing resources and information among nations. This meeting underscored the role of diplomacy in navigating complex regional dynamics and the necessity of cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals.
