Argentina's Senate approved the European Union–Mercosur trade agreement on 26/02/2026, completing the country's parliamentary ratification process after more than 25 years of negotiations between the two regional blocs. The agreement involves the European Union and the Mercosur countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Under President Javier Milei, Argentina became one of the first Mercosur members to ratify the agreement, which aims to reduce trade barriers, expand market access, and strengthen commercial cooperation between Europe and South America.
The agreement provides for the gradual reduction or elimination of tariffs on a wide range of goods, alongside provisions addressing services, investment, public procurement, and regulatory cooperation. Agricultural exports, industrial products, and manufacturing are among the sectors affected by its proposed trade arrangements. Argentina's parliamentary approval represented a national ratification step, but did not by itself bring the agreement into force across both regions. Implementation remained subject to the agreement's applicable legal procedures and approvals.
