Claude 3.5 Sonnet — Introduced

Anthropic introduced Claude 3.5 Sonnet on June 20, 2024, as the first model in the Claude 3.5 generation. It was designed to deliver a major improvement in intelligence and reasoning while maintaining the speed and cost efficiency associated with the Sonnet family. Claude 3.5 Sonnet showed particularly strong performance in coding, reasoning, writing, visual understanding, and complex problem-solving. Anthropic also highlighted improvements in understanding charts, graphs, and images, making the model more capable across both text and visual tasks. The model quickly became an important milestone for Claude, outperforming the previous Claude 3 Opus on several evaluations while operating at a much lower cost. It demonstrated Anthropic’s approach of bringing high-end AI capabilities into a faster and more accessible model.
