Anthropic introduced Claude 3 Sonnet on March 4, 2024, alongside Claude 3 Opus as part of the new Claude 3 family. Sonnet was designed to provide a balance between intelligence, speed, and cost, making it suitable for a wide range of everyday and professional AI tasks.
Claude 3 Sonnet improved Claude’s ability to understand complex instructions, analyze information, write content, solve problems, and assist with coding. Like the other Claude 3 models, it also introduced vision capabilities, allowing the model to understand images, charts, graphs, and other visual content.
Sonnet became a popular middle-ground option in Anthropic’s lineup, positioned between the more powerful Opus and the faster, more economical Haiku. This three-tier approach became an important part of how Anthropic offered Claude models to different types of users.
