Airbus officially inaugurated its first Final Assembly Line outside Europe in Tianjin, China, dedicated to the A320 family of aircraft. The facility marked a concrete step in the long term industrial cooperation between Airbus and Chinese aviation partners, reflecting China’s growing role in global commercial aviation manufacturing.
The Tianjin Final Assembly Line was established as a joint venture between Airbus and a consortium of Chinese companies, including AVIC and the Tianjin Free Trade Zone. Construction of the plant began in 2007, following an agreement signed in 2006 between Airbus and Chinese authorities. The assembly line was modeled on Airbus’s single aisle production system in Hamburg, Germany, and was designed to assemble aircraft from major sections manufactured in Europe and transported to China for final assembly.
The first aircraft assembled at the Tianjin facility, an A320, was delivered to Sichuan Airlines in June 2009. At the time of the opening, Airbus planned an initial production rate of four aircraft per month, with the capacity to increase output in line with market demand. The plant was expected to assemble A319 and A320 variants, later expanding to include the A321 model as market requirements evolved.
The Tianjin assembly line represented Airbus’s strategy to deepen its industrial presence in China, one of the fastest growing aviation markets globally. By the late 2000s, Chinese airlines had placed significant orders for Airbus single aisle aircraft, and the establishment of local assembly capabilities aligned with long term fleet expansion plans by Chinese carriers. The project also included training programs for Chinese engineers and technicians, integrating them into Airbus’s global production network.
The inauguration ceremony in Tianjin was attended by senior Airbus executives and Chinese government officials, underlining the industrial and diplomatic dimensions of the partnership. The plant has since continued to assemble aircraft for Chinese and international customers, contributing to Airbus’s global single aisle production system.
