William McKinley, a Republican from Ohio, was inaugurated as the 25th President of the United States after winning the election against William Jennings Bryan. McKinley's presidency was marked by a focus on economic issues, including the implementation of protective tariffs to promote American industry.
During his term, McKinley also oversaw the annexation of Hawaii and the Spanish-American War, which resulted in the United States gaining control of territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. His administration's policies towards these newly acquired territories sparked debates about imperialism and America's role in the world.
McKinley's presidency came to a tragic end when he was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo, New York. His assassination led to the succession of Vice President Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency, who would go on to become one of the most influential leaders in American history.
