In 1997, Philips prepared for an important corporate transformation that strengthened its identity as one of the Netherlands' most internationally recognized industrial enterprises. The company adopted the official name Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (Royal Philips Electronics) on April 1, 1998, reflecting its Royal designation and longstanding association with Dutch technological innovation. Founded in 1891 by Frederik and Gerard Philips in Eindhoven, the company had grown from a small electric light bulb manufacturer into a global electronics corporation. The new corporate identity emphasized Philips' international reputation, extensive technological achievements, and important contributions to Dutch industry. During this period, Philips also began relocating its corporate headquarters from Eindhoven to Amsterdam, reinforcing its position as a modern multinational enterprise. The adoption of the Royal Philips Electronics name became a significant milestone in the company's history, symbolizing more than a century of industrial growth, scientific research, and international expansion. By the late 1990s, Philips had established a worldwide presence through innovations in electric lighting, radio, television, medical imaging, semiconductors, and digital audio technology. Its contributions included the compact audio cassette, the Compact Disc developed with Sony, and numerous advances in healthcare equipment. The Royal identity strengthened the company's connection to its Dutch heritage while supporting its reputation as a global technology leader. In 2013, the company simplified its official name to Koninklijke Philips N.V. (Royal Philips), reflecting its evolving focus on healthcare, technology, and improving people's lives. This corporate milestone remains an important chapter in Philips' transformation from a pioneering Dutch manufacturer into a globally recognized innovation company.
