On May 31, 2016, Royal Philips officially completed the initial public offering (IPO) of its lighting division, establishing Philips Lighting as a separately listed company. Philips Lighting had begun trading on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange on May 27, 2016, under the ticker symbol LIGHT, with the IPO formally settling four days later. The offering involved the sale of 37.5 million shares, representing 25% of the company's share capital, at €20 per share, generating approximately €750 million in gross proceeds for Royal Philips. Led by Chief Executive Officer Eric Rondolat, Philips Lighting continued developing conventional lighting, energy-efficient LED products, and connected lighting systems. The transaction represented a decisive milestone in Royal Philips' transformation into a company increasingly focused on healthcare technology, medical imaging, patient monitoring, and personal health solutions. The Philips Lighting IPO became one of the most significant milestones in the company's 125-year history, formally separating the lighting operations that had been central to Philips since its founding in Eindhoven in 1891. The offering was Europe's largest IPO of 2016 up to that date and provided Philips Lighting with greater independence to pursue innovation in LED technology, smart lighting, connected systems, and energy-efficient illumination. Royal Philips initially retained a majority ownership stake, which it planned to reduce progressively while concentrating its resources on healthcare technology and integrated medical solutions. On May 16, 2018, Philips Lighting adopted the corporate name Signify, while continuing to use the Philips brand for its lighting products under a licensing agreement. The 2016 IPO marked a historic turning point, allowing both businesses to pursue specialized strategies and strengthening Philips' transformation into a globally focused health technology company.
