In September 2004, Royal Philips Electronics launched its global “sense and simplicity” branding initiative, marking an important transformation in the company's marketing strategy and corporate identity. Introduced under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Gerard Kleisterlee, the campaign emphasized Philips' commitment to developing advanced technologies that were intuitive, accessible, and easy to use. The new slogan replaced the company's previous “Let's Make Things Better” message and reflected its ambition to become a more customer-focused organization. Supported by a global advertising investment of approximately €80 million, the initiative promoted Philips' products and services across healthcare, consumer electronics, lighting, and lifestyle technology. Its central message emphasized that technological innovation should simplify everyday activities rather than introduce unnecessary complexity. The introduction of “sense and simplicity” became a defining milestone in Philips' evolution toward human-centered innovation and modern product design. More than a traditional advertising campaign, the initiative established three guiding principles for Philips' products and services: advanced technology, ease of use, and design based on people's needs. These principles influenced the development and presentation of products such as Ambilight televisions, Sonicare toothbrushes, medical imaging equipment, and personal care appliances. The campaign also helped create a consistent international brand identity across Philips' diverse business divisions, strengthening its recognition among consumers and healthcare professionals. By emphasizing practical innovation and meaningful user experiences, Philips reinforced its ambition to improve people's quality of life through technology. The 2004 campaign laid an important foundation for the company's subsequent brand development, including the introduction of its “Innovation and You” positioning in 2013.
