On March 17, 2008, Royal Philips Electronics officially announced the completion of its acquisition of Respironics, a leading American medical technology company headquartered in Murrysville, Pennsylvania. The acquisition, valued at approximately $5.1 billion (€3.6 billion) when announced in December 2007, significantly expanded Philips' capabilities in sleep therapy, respiratory care, and patient monitoring. Respironics specialized in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, noninvasive ventilation systems, home oxygen therapy equipment, and respiratory monitoring technologies. The transaction closed for accounting purposes on March 10, 2008, and gave Philips full ownership of Respironics, strengthening its position in the global healthcare technology industry and expanding its ability to provide advanced medical solutions for hospitals and home-based patient care. The completion of the Respironics acquisition became a defining milestone in Philips' transformation into a leading global healthcare technology company. By combining Respironics' expertise in sleep apnea treatment and respiratory therapy with Philips' existing strengths in medical imaging, patient monitoring, and healthcare information systems, the company significantly broadened its medical technology portfolio. The acquisition established a strong foundation for Philips' Home Healthcare Solutions business and strengthened its position in respiratory care, oxygen therapy, and noninvasive ventilation. It also expanded Philips' presence in the United States and provided opportunities to develop integrated healthcare solutions connecting hospital treatment with long-term care at home. This strategic investment helped advance Philips' ambition to improve patient outcomes, support healthcare professionals, and make advanced medical technologies more accessible across different care settings.
