In 1991, Philips undertook a major corporate restructuring aimed at strengthening its global identity and simplifying its organizational structure. The company announced plans to adopt the name Philips Electronics N.V., reflecting its transformation from an electric light bulb manufacturer into a diversified international electronics enterprise. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Jan Timmer, Philips introduced extensive organizational reforms through a program known as Operation Centurion, designed to improve efficiency, strengthen business operations, and increase international competitiveness. The restructuring also involved simplifying the company's holding structure and reorganizing its global activities. Although the new identity was associated with the changes announced in 1991, Philips' official corporate records establish May 6, 1994, as the date the legal entity formally adopted the name Philips Electronics N.V. The corporate restructuring of the early 1990s became an important milestone in Philips' evolution into a modern multinational technology company. Operation Centurion encouraged more focused management, streamlined decision-making, and greater attention to businesses such as consumer electronics, lighting, semiconductors, and medical systems. The adoption of the Philips Electronics name reinforced the company's identity as a global electronics leader rather than solely a manufacturer of electric lamps. Subsequent developments included the introduction of new digital entertainment products, the expansion of advanced medical technologies, and further international growth. In 1998, the company adopted the name Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V., emphasizing its Dutch Royal designation and international standing. These changes laid important foundations for Philips' later transformation into a company increasingly focused on healthcare technology and innovation.
