On December 21, 2007, Royal Philips Electronics announced an agreement to acquire Respironics, a leading American manufacturer of sleep and respiratory care equipment headquartered in Murrysville, Pennsylvania. The acquisition, valued at approximately $5.1 billion (€3.6 billion), represented one of Philips' largest investments in healthcare technology. Respironics specialized in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, noninvasive ventilation systems, respiratory monitoring equipment, and home oxygen therapy solutions. Employing more than 5,300 people and operating in approximately 141 countries, the company brought extensive technological expertise and an established international customer network. The agreement aimed to strengthen Philips' position in sleep apnea treatment, respiratory therapy, and home healthcare.
The acquisition became a major milestone in Philips' transformation from a diversified electronics manufacturer into a global healthcare technology leader. Completed in March 2008, the transaction significantly expanded Philips Healthcare's capabilities in sleep therapy, respiratory monitoring, and home-based medical treatment. By combining Respironics' specialized respiratory technologies with Philips' existing medical imaging, patient monitoring, and healthcare information systems, the company strengthened its ability to provide integrated solutions across hospitals and patients' homes. The acquisition also expanded Philips' presence in the United States and created opportunities for international growth in sleep apnea management and respiratory care. Respironics became a central part of Philips' Home Healthcare Solutions business, supporting the company's long-term strategy of developing innovative medical technologies that improve patient care and quality of life.
