On May 15, 2013, Royal Philips officially changed its corporate name from Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. to Koninklijke Philips N.V. (Royal Philips), marking an important milestone in its strategic transformation. The decision to remove “Electronics” reflected the company's evolution from a traditional electronics manufacturer into a diversified technology enterprise increasingly focused on healthcare, personal well-being, and innovative consumer solutions. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten, Philips was restructuring its business portfolio to emphasize meaningful innovation, advanced healthcare systems, and technologies designed to improve people's lives. The name change reinforced the company's commitment to a more focused global identity while preserving its Dutch heritage and internationally recognized Philips brand.
The adoption of the Royal Philips name became a defining step in the company's long-term transformation toward healthcare technology and human-centered innovation. In November 2013, Philips introduced its new global brand positioning, “Innovation and You,” alongside a redesigned version of its iconic Philips shield. The updated identity emphasized the company's ambition to deliver technologies that addressed people's everyday needs and improved quality of life. During this period, Philips continued expanding its activities in medical imaging, patient monitoring, connected healthcare, personal care, and energy-efficient lighting. These developments laid the foundation for the company's subsequent separation of its lighting operations in 2016 and its stronger focus on health technology. The 2013 name change symbolized Philips' transition from a broad electronics conglomerate toward a more specialized, innovation-driven global healthcare technology company.
