In November 2022, South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution advanced plans to expand its electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility near Wrocław, Poland, in response to growing European demand for electric vehicles. On 14/11/2022, the City of Wrocław reported that the company's production complex in Biskupice Podgórne was undergoing further expansion, with plans to increase annual battery production capacity and recruit additional employees. The development formed part of LG Energy Solution's strategy to strengthen its European manufacturing operations and supply automotive manufacturers with locally produced lithium-ion batteries. Although 17/11/2022 has been associated with the announcement, the expansion plans were publicly documented by 14/11/2022, and a separate official announcement on 17/11/2022 has not been verified.
LG Energy Solution originated as the battery business of LG Chem and became a separately incorporated company on 01/12/2020. It remained part of the wider LG corporate group while operating as a dedicated manufacturer of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and electronic devices. The company's European manufacturing presence was centered on its Polish facility, established in 2016 in Biskupice Podgórne, within the Kobierzyce municipality near Wrocław. The site developed into one of Europe's largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing complexes for electric vehicles.
By November 2022, the Polish manufacturing complex occupied approximately 100 hectares and employed more than 10,000 people. Its production facilities included dozens of manufacturing lines for automotive batteries. According to the Wrocław municipal announcement, the plant had an annual production capacity of approximately 70 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with plans to reach 86 GWh by the end of 2022 and a longer-term target of 115 GWh by 2025. These figures represented planned manufacturing capacity, rather than confirmed production volumes achieved on those dates
