On November 15, 1959, GoldStar Co., Ltd., the predecessor of LG Electronics, produced South Korea's first domestically manufactured radio, the A-501, under its GoldStar trademark. Founded in October 1958 by entrepreneur Koo In-hwoi, GoldStar achieved this milestone just over a year after its establishment. The A-501 was a five-vacuum-tube radio designed to provide South Korean households with a more affordable alternative to expensive imported radios. The first production run consisted of approximately 80 units, and the radio was initially sold through Midopa Department Store. Its introduction marked the beginning of domestic radio manufacturing and represented a major achievement in South Korea's emerging electronics industry. The development of the GoldStar A-501 became a defining moment in South Korea's technological and industrial history, demonstrating the country's growing ability to manufacture electronic products domestically. By making radio technology more accessible, GoldStar helped expand access to news, music, and entertainment while establishing the foundation for a national consumer electronics industry. The success of the A-501 encouraged further technological development, leading GoldStar to introduce South Korea's first domestically manufactured refrigerator in 1965 and black-and-white television in 1966. The company eventually became LG Electronics in 1995, growing into a globally recognized electronics manufacturer. Today, the original A-501 is recognized as an important historical artifact representing the origins of South Korea's modern electronics industry.
