Bulgaria secured its first-ever victory at the Eurovision Song Contest on 16/05/2026, as Bulgarian singer Dara won the 70th edition of the competition with the song “Bangaranga.” The contest was held at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria, following Austria’s victory in 2025. Dara’s energetic dance performance earned Bulgaria a historic breakthrough after years of participation in the competition without a win.
The 27-year-old performer received a combined total of 516 points, including 312 points from the international public televote and 204 points from professional juries across participating countries. Bulgaria finished at the top of the overall scoreboard, ahead of Israel’s Noam Bettan, who placed second with the song “New Day Will Rise” for the second consecutive year. The result marked one of the strongest combined jury and televote performances of the 2026 competition.
Bulgaria first entered Eurovision in 2005 and had previously achieved several high placements without winning the contest. The country had also withdrawn from participation multiple times due to financial and organizational challenges, including an absence from the previous three editions before returning in 2026. Dara’s victory therefore represented both a successful comeback and the nation’s first Eurovision title since joining the competition more than two decades earlier.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 took place between 12/05/2026 and 16/05/2026 in Vienna, Austria. Austria hosted the event after Austrian artist JJ won Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland, with the operatic pop ballad “Wasted Love.” The 2026 edition featured competitors from across Europe and partner broadcasting nations, continuing Eurovision’s long-running format combining national jury voting with international public televoting.
Following the final, celebrations were reported in Bulgaria as fans and broadcasters marked the country’s first Eurovision triumph. Under Eurovision tradition, Bulgaria earned the right to host the 2027 contest, pending confirmation by the Bulgarian national broadcaster and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Why This Moment Matters :
Bulgaria’s victory ended more than 20 years of attempts to win Eurovision and came immediately after the country’s return from a multi-year absence. The result also highlighted the increasing influence of televoting in shaping Eurovision outcomes, with Dara receiving one of the contest’s strongest public support totals in 2026.
